LG air conditioner symbols cover modes, fan speeds, timers and the smart features on newer remotes. An LG remote has more buttons than most, and behind one of them sits a list of extra functions that never appear on the screen until you go looking. That is why an LG display can show a symbol you have genuinely never seen before, on a system you have owned for years.

Lg air conditioner symbols guide by Rapid Air Cooling

LG air conditioner symbols cover the usual modes that every brand shares, and then keep going into territory the others do not visit. Some of them change comfort, some change running cost, and a couple do things you would not guess from the icon alone.

This guide works through the symbols on an LG remote and indoor display, explains what each one actually changes, and separates the settings from the handful of indications that mean something needs attention.

LG air conditioner symbols at a glance

The chart below covers the symbols on the remote and the lamps on the indoor unit, with the meanings taken from what LG publishes in its owner manuals. Everything after it explains the same symbols in more detail.

Symbol or lampWhat it meansWhat to do
SnowflakeCooling mode.Use it in summer. If the air is not cold, check the set temperature before anything else.
SunHeating mode.Point the vane down. Warm air rises, so an outward setting heats the ceiling.
Water dropDehumidification, which LG publishes as removing excess moisture while adjusting temperature and fan speed automatically.Use it on a muggy day. It is not a cooling mode.
FanFan mode, published as circulating the indoor air without changing the room temperature.Switch to cool or heat if you want the temperature to move.
AUTO, or AI on multi systemsAuto changeover. LG publishes that it maintains the temperature automatically within about 2 degrees.Select cool or heat directly if you want a faster response.
JET MODEJet cooling blows strong air for 30 minutes at an 18 degree setting. Jet heating, where fitted, runs for 60 minutes at 30 degrees.Nothing to do. It hands control back automatically when the published period ends.
Rising bars beside a fanFan speed. Newer LG remotes publish five steps plus natural wind. Older remotes publish four steps including CHAOS.Raise the speed in heating. Low fan moves very little heat around a room.
Natural wind, or CHAOS on older remotesThe unit varies the fan speed automatically rather than holding one step.Use it overnight. Use a fixed speed when you want predictable airflow.
Comfort AirLG publishes this as setting the vane to a preset position so the supply air is deflected away from blowing directly onto the occupants.Turn it on if someone complains about the draught. Pressing MODE or JET MODE cancels it.
kWInstantaneous power consumption. LG publishes it as displayed for up to 3 seconds.Use it to compare settings. It is a live reading, not a running total.
ENERGY CTRLEnergy control, published as limiting power input in steps of 20 percent, 40 percent and on some models 60 percent compared with rated power input.Use it when the circuit is tight. Expect slower cooling while it is limited.
Auto cleanLG publishes that moisture is generated inside the indoor unit in cooling and dehumidification, and that this function removes it. The fan continues for 30 minutes after the unit is shut down.Nothing. A unit still running after you switch it off is drying itself, not faulting.
Ionizer or PlasmaAir purifying. LG publishes the ionizer as using millions of ions to help improve indoor air quality, and plasma as removing microscopic contaminants from the intake air. Both can run independently of cooling and heating on the models that carry them.
Crescent moon, sleep or comfort sleepSleep mode, which turns the air conditioner off automatically. LG publishes a duration adjustable up to 7 hours. In cooling and dry, LG publishes the temperature rising 1 degree after 30 minutes, up to 2 degrees above the setting.
ON TIMER and OFF TIMERStart and stop the unit at set times. LG publishes that both can be set together.Check these first if the unit starts or stops by itself.
Moving arrows or SWINGAirflow direction. LG publishes separate vertical and horizontal swing controls on newer remotes.LG publishes a warning that adjusting the air deflector by hand may cause product failure. Use the buttons.
LIGHT OFFAdjusts the brightness of the indoor unit display.Use it in a bedroom. It changes the display only, not the operation.
ROOM TEMPShows the current room temperature instead of the set temperature.Useful for telling whether the unit is actually reaching its target.
Silent or quietReduces noise from the outdoor unit in cooling, heating and auto modes.Expect reduced capacity. LG publishes that MODE, ENERGY CTRL and JET MODE all cancel it.
On and Off lamp on the indoor unitLG publishes that it lights during system operation, error code display and auto restart setting. If it is showing something that is not normal running, note the pattern before calling.
Timer lamp on the indoor unitLights during timer operation, and on inverter models during sleep mode auto operation.Clear the timer if it is lit and you did not set one.
Defrost mode lamp on the indoor unitLights during defrost or hot start on heat pump models. LG publishes that defrosting should finish in approximately 15 minutes.Wait. No heat is delivered while it runs, and that is by design.
Energy saving cooling lampLights during energy saving cooling mode on inverter models.Turn energy saving off if cooling feels weak.
Outdoor unit operation lampLights while the outdoor unit runs, on cooling only models. If it never lights while the system is calling for cooling, that is worth reporting.

LG prints the display icons as pictures rather than naming them in words, so the symbol descriptions above are how they appear on the remote. The meanings and every figure come from LG published owner manuals. Some functions vary by model, which LG states directly in its own documentation.

Mode symbols on an LG remote

Mode is the first thing to read on any display, because it decides what the system will do with everything else you set.

  • A snowflake is cooling, which LG describes as the cooling mode.
  • A sun is heating.
  • A water drop is dehumidification, which strips moisture from the room air.
  • A fan is fan mode, moving air without heating or cooling it.
  • Auto is the auto changeover mode, where the unit decides between heating and cooling for you.

The mode button steps through these in turn, which is how people land on fan mode by accident. The unit runs, air comes out, the room stays where it was, and it looks exactly like a failure.

Auto changeover is the other common trap. On a mild day it can select heating when you wanted cooling, because it is comparing the room against your setting rather than against your intentions.

The jet mode symbol

Jet mode is LG shorthand for changing a room temperature quickly, and it is more specific than most burst functions on other brands.

It runs strong airflow at preset temperatures, eighteen degrees for thirty minutes in cooling and thirty degrees for sixty minutes in heating, then returns to your previous settings.

Two things follow from that. It is not a setting to leave on, and if the symbol disappears after half an hour, nothing has gone wrong. The unit has finished doing what you asked.

Fan speed symbols

Fan speed appears as a set of bars or a small fan that fills as the speed rises, and LG offers more steps than most.

  • High moves the most air and shifts a room fastest.
  • Medium high and medium sit between the extremes.
  • Medium low and low are quieter and slower.
  • Natural wind varies the airflow rather than holding it steady, which feels less like sitting in a draught.

A remote left on a low setting is one of the most convincing imitations of a failing air conditioner there is. Check this symbol before deciding anything is wrong with the system.

Swing and comfort air symbols

LG separates these two, and the distinction is worth understanding because they solve different problems.

Swing adjusts the airflow direction vertically or horizontally, moving the louvres to spread air around the room. Comfort air adjusts the airflow to deflect the wind away from you, which suits anyone who finds direct airflow uncomfortable.

The general rule still applies. Cold air sinks and warm air rises, so cooling works best with air aimed high and heating works best with air aimed low.

LG aircon symbols for energy saving

This is where LG offers more than most brands, and where the symbols are easiest to confuse with one another.

  • Energy saving minimises power consumption.
  • Energy control brings the effect of power saving in graduated steps, so you can choose how much output to give up.
  • A kilowatt display, reached by holding its button, shows energy consumption rather than changing anything.

The trade off is the same as on any brand. Less energy means less output, so on a very hot afternoon these settings can make a healthy air conditioner feel underpowered.

If your LG has started struggling in the heat, switch these off before concluding there is a fault. It is free, instant, and it resolves a good share of complaints.

Timer and sleep symbols

Timer symbols explain most cases of an air conditioner that refuses to start when you want it, and LG groups several of them together.

  • An on timer turns the unit on automatically at a chosen time.
  • An off timer turns it off at a chosen time.
  • A sleep timer runs the system for a set period overnight and then stops.
  • A separate set and cancel function confirms or clears what you have programmed.

If a system behaves strangely at the same hour every day, these are the symbols to check first. A timer set months ago will quietly override the button you pressed a moment ago.

The special function symbols behind the function button

LG puts a set of extra functions behind a function button, and each has its own symbol when active. Many owners never discover them, which is a shame because several are genuinely useful.

  • Air purification removes particles from the room air.
  • Silent mode reduces noise from the outdoor unit, which matters in a townhouse or near a neighbour.
  • Jet dry lowers indoor humidity quickly.
  • Auto clean removes moisture generated inside the indoor unit after running.
  • Comfort sleep creates a more comfortable sleeping environment.
  • Low heating maintains a minimum room temperature and prevents things in the room from freezing.
  • Ion care generates ion clusters and is aimed at skin moisture.
  • Mosquito away is designed to deter mosquitoes.

Auto clean deserves a mention of its own. It runs the fan after the system stops in order to dry the inside of the indoor unit, which is one of the more effective ways to keep mould and smells out of a split system.

If your LG keeps running for a while after you switch it off, this function is the usual explanation and it is doing you a favour.

The light off symbol

Light off sets the brightness of the display on the indoor unit, and it is the reason an LG can appear to be switched off while it is still running.

It is aimed at bedrooms, where a bright panel is the last thing anyone wants overnight. It changes nothing about how the system cools or heats.

If your indoor unit has gone dark but the room is still being conditioned, look here before assuming the display has failed.

The room temperature and diagnosis symbols

Two LG functions display information rather than changing a setting, and both are handy when something seems off.

The room temperature function shows the temperature the unit is actually measuring, which is useful when the room feels different from what you expected. A system reading a warm spot near a lamp or a window will behave differently from one reading the middle of the room.

The diagnosis function checks maintenance information stored in the product. It is intended as a quick health check rather than a repair tool, and what it reports is worth passing on when you call for service.

Which LG air conditioner symbols mean something is wrong?

Almost everything on an LG display is a setting. Sorting the screen into groups makes it far less daunting.

  • Settings you chose include mode, fan speed, swing, comfort air, jet mode, energy saving and timers.
  • Special functions include air purification, silent mode, jet dry, auto clean, comfort sleep, low heating, ion care and mosquito away.
  • Display only functions include room temperature, energy consumption and diagnosis.
  • Normal protective behaviour includes defrosting during heating and the restart delay after the system stops.
  • A fault usually appears as a code on the indoor unit display, often a letter and number pairing.

Only that last group needs a technician. Everything above it is either something you chose or something the system does deliberately.

What does the snowflake symbol mean on an LG air conditioner?

The snowflake is cooling mode. The unit draws heat out of the room air and rejects it through the outdoor unit until your set temperature is reached.

If the snowflake is showing and the air is not cold, look at the set temperature, look at the filters, and allow a few minutes in case the system is still inside its restart delay after a stop.

What does the water drop symbol mean on an LG?

The water drop is dehumidification. The system pulls moisture out of the air rather than chasing a temperature, and the fan runs slowly while it does so.

It is the right choice on a humid but mild day. On a hot afternoon, cooling mode will do considerably more for the room.

Why does my LG keep running after I turn it off?

Most often because auto clean is enabled. The function dries the moisture that builds up inside the indoor unit during cooling, and it does that by running the fan for a period after the system stops.

It is a feature rather than a fault, and it is worth leaving on. Damp left inside an indoor unit is what produces the musty smell people complain about a season later.

Why does my LG remote show symbols I cannot find in any guide?

Because the function set varies between models, and LG offers more optional functions than most brands. A guide written for one series will list symbols another model simply does not have.

The definitive reference is the owner manual for your exact model, and the model number is on a label on the indoor unit rather than on the remote.

Reading an LG display in order

When the system is not doing what you expect, work down the screen methodically rather than pressing buttons until something changes.

  1. Check the mode symbol first, because fan and dehumidification both run without cooling the room.
  2. Compare the set temperature with how the room actually feels.
  3. Check the fan speed, since a low setting imitates a failing system.
  4. Check for energy saving or energy control if the output feels weak.
  5. Check for a timer symbol, the usual reason a unit will not start.
  6. Check whether comfort air is redirecting the airflow away from you.
  7. Check the filters, which cause more complaints than the entire display combined.

Seven checks, none of them needing a tool, and between them they cover most of the calls that end without a single part being fitted.

When the symbols read correctly and the room still does not

Occasionally the display is perfectly normal and the system still underperforms. At that point the cause is usually physical rather than a setting.

  • Filters blocked to the point that air can no longer pass through the indoor coil.
  • An outdoor unit crowded by plants, fencing or stored items so it cannot shed heat.
  • Doors and windows open onto areas the system was never sized to cover.
  • A refrigerant charge that has dropped, which shows as performance fading gradually rather than stopping suddenly.

The first three are yours to fix and cost nothing. Our guide to how often you should service your air conditioner sets out what a proper service includes.

How LG compares with other brands

The mode symbols are shared across the whole industry, so a snowflake means the same thing on an LG as it does anywhere else. The differences begin after that.

LG stands out for the sheer number of optional functions, and for splitting energy saving into graduated steps rather than a single on and off setting. Both are useful once you know they are there.

For the universal set, our guide to air conditioner symbols covers what every brand shares, and the brand guides explain the functions each manufacturer names differently.

Getting more out of the remote

Nearly every LG air conditioner symbol belongs to one of four groups. A mode, an airflow setting, an energy or comfort function, or a timer.

Learn the mode symbols and the timer symbols first. Between them they explain almost every occasion when an LG appears to be ignoring you, and they take about a minute to commit to memory.

If the display reads correctly, the filters are clean and the system still will not perform, or if a code has appeared on the indoor unit, the next step needs test equipment and a licence. We service LG split, multi head and ducted systems across Melbourne, with the price confirmed before any work begins.

If the display reads correctly and the system still will not perform, our page on LG air conditioner service near me covers what a visit involves.
