Daikin Drip and Drain Faults
Daikin Air Conditioner Leaking Water
Finding your Daikin air conditioner leaking water down a wall or onto the carpet is unsettling. The good news is that most leaks come from condensate, the harmless water every cooling system makes, rather than anything dangerous. Here we explain where that water should go, why it escapes on Daikin wall, cassette and ducted units, what you can check safely and when a technician should step in.
First Response
What Should You Do the Moment You See Water?
Act calmly but quickly. Water near electrical fittings is the main risk, so protect people and the home first. After that, you can start working out the cause.
- Switch the Daikin off at the remote or wall controller.
- If water is near a power point, downlight or switch, turn off that circuit at the switchboard.
- Place a towel or bucket under the drip to protect floors and furniture.
- Move electronics, rugs and books away from the wet area.
- Take a photo of where the water appears and note the time and weather.
- Look for any code on the controller or a flashing lamp on the indoor unit.
Those notes matter. A leak that happens only on muggy afternoons tells a different story from one that appears after a winter heating session.
Where the Water Comes From
Why Does a Daikin Produce Water in the First Place?
In cooling and Dry mode, the indoor coil runs well below room temperature. Moisture in the air condenses on its fins, just like droplets on a cold glass. That water runs into a tray beneath the coil, called the drain pan.
From the pan, a flexible hose carries the water outside. Most wall splits rely on gravity, so the hose must fall steadily all the way. Many cassette and ducted Daikin systems lift the water with a small condensate pump instead, because the drain has to climb before it can fall.
Dry mode is designed to remove moisture, so it can produce plenty of water on a humid day. Therefore a drain that copes in mild weather can suddenly overflow during a tropical spell. When water appears anywhere other than the drain outlet, something along that path has failed.
Wall split
Gravity drain through the rear of the unit and out the wall. Leaks usually drip from the bottom edge or the front louvres.
Ceiling cassette
Built in condensate pump with a float switch. Leaks often stain the ceiling around the panel.
Ducted unit
Indoor unit sits in the roof with a pan, pump or gravity line and often a safety tray beneath. Leaks show as ceiling stains, sometimes far from any outlet.
Ranked Causes
Why Is My Daikin Dripping Water Inside?
These causes are ordered from the usual and simple to the less common and more involved. Start at the top of the first column.
Common and simple
- Dusty filters let the coil freeze, then the ice melts faster than the pan drains
- The outdoor end of the drain hose is buried in soil, mulch or pavers
- Spiders, wasps or ants have nested inside the open end of the hose
- Algae and slime have built up in the pan or drain line
- The drain hose is kinked behind furniture or squashed outside
- Running Cool at a very low set point on a humid day overloads the pan
Needs a technician
- The condensate pump on a cassette or ducted unit has failed or weakened
- The float switch is stuck, so the pump never gets a signal
- The indoor unit was mounted with a slight backward tilt
- The drain line has a sag or uphill section inside the wall
- Low refrigerant is making the coil ice up repeatedly
- The drain pan is cracked, warped or its insulation has come loose
- Pipe insulation has gaps, so the copper sweats and drips
Notice how many causes link back to ice. A frozen coil does not leak while it is frozen. Instead, the problem appears when the unit stops and all that ice melts at once.
Reading the Clues
Can the Location of the Leak Point to the Cause?
Often it can. Where the water appears, and when, narrows things down considerably. Use the table of clues below as a rough guide rather than a final answer.
Water spitting from the louvres
Droplets blown into the room usually mean the coil is too cold, or the pan is full and the fan is picking water up. Check filters first, then consider a refrigerant issue.
Steady drip from one corner of a wall split
This often points to a tilt in the mounting or a partial blockage at the drain spout on that side.
Water running down the wall below the unit
The drain hose connection behind the unit may have loosened, or the hose has split where it passes through the wall.
Brown ring on the ceiling near a cassette
A pump or float switch problem is likely. The stain may grow slowly over several humid weeks.
Stain on a ceiling well away from outlets
On ducted systems, water may be escaping from the indoor unit in the roof, an overflowing safety tray, or sweating ductwork.
Puddle after winter heating
Heating creates little indoor condensate. Water after heating may come from the outdoor unit defrosting, or rain entering through a wall penetration.
Safe Owner Checks
What Can a Homeowner Safely Check on a Leaking Daikin?
The steps below stay outside sealed parts and away from live wiring. If a check needs a ladder, only continue if you are steady and confident.
Turn the unit off and let it rest
Give any ice on the coil time to melt and drain. An hour is usually enough on a wall split.Remove and clean the filters
Lift the front panel and slide the filters out. Vacuum or rinse them, then let them dry completely before refitting.Follow the drain hose outside
Look below the indoor unit outside, or near the outdoor unit. Clear soil or mulch from the open end and make sure it points down.Check for insects at the outlet
Gently tap the end of the hose. If debris falls out, a nest may be the cause. Fitting a simple insect cap later helps prevent repeats.Look for kinks you can reach
Check any visible section of hose for bends or flattening, particularly where it runs behind cabinets or along a fence.Run a short cooling test
Restart in Cool for twenty minutes at a moderate setting. Watch the outdoor drain outlet. Steady dripping there means water is finding its way out.
Do not pour chemicals into the unit or push wire up the drain from inside. Both can damage the pan, pump or coil. Our wider guide to air conditioner leaking water covers general methods that apply to all brands.
Error Codes
Which Daikin Codes Are Linked to Water Leaks?
Wall splits usually have no float switch, so they simply drip. Cassette and ducted Daikin units, however, often stop and display a code before water reaches the ceiling. The complete list is on our Daikin error codes hub.
A3, drain level
The float switch has detected rising water. Cooling stops to prevent an overflow. Read the Daikin A3 guide for causes and checks.
A5, coil protection
The indoor coil got too cold in cooling. Ice that later melts is a classic leak source. See Daikin A5.
A6, indoor fan motor
A slow indoor fan lets the coil freeze and overload the drain. Learn more on Daikin A6.
A Daikin C4 indoor coil sensor fault can also play a part, because the board relies on that reading to manage frost protection. Write any code down before you reset the power.
Weather and Climate
Why Do Daikin Leaks Spike in Humid Australian Weather?
Humidity sets the amount of water a unit must move. In Brisbane, wet season air is heavy with moisture, and units run for long stretches. Drains that are slightly restricted cope through spring, then fall behind in January and February.
Sydney sees similar sticky spells, particularly in coastal and harbourside suburbs. Warm, damp conditions also feed algae, so slime builds faster in pans during long summers.
By contrast, Perth and Adelaide summers are drier. Leaks there are more often tied to dust clogging filters, which freezes the coil and causes a melt leak later. Melbourne swings between dry heat and humid change days, so drains are tested by sudden bursts of moisture.
Storms add another factor. Heavy rain can flood garden beds and cover drain outlets. Strong winds can also blow debris into an open hose end, creating a blockage in a single afternoon.

What Does a Licensed Technician Do About a Daikin Leak?
A technician traces the water from the coil to the outlet, then works out why it escaped. The aim is to fix the cause, not simply mop up the result.
- Inspect and clean the drain pan, removing sludge and algae.
- Flush the drain line along its full length and check the fall.
- Test the condensate pump and float switch on cassette and ducted units.
- Check the indoor unit is level using a spirit level on the mounting plate.
- Inspect pipe insulation for gaps that allow sweating.
- Clean the indoor coil if dirt is restricting airflow.
- Measure refrigerant pressures if the coil has been icing.
- Check the indoor fan speed against its expected range.
- Look for water damage in ceilings and recommend drying where needed.
If low refrigerant is found, the leak in the refrigerant circuit must be located and repaired before regassing. That work requires an ARCtick licensed technician, and the technicians we send hold the licences their work requires.
Running Safety
Is It Safe to Keep Using a Daikin That Leaks?
A small drip into a bucket is not an emergency. Even so, running the unit while it leaks has costs. Water can stain plaster, swell skirting boards and encourage mould behind walls.
Heating mode is often fine for a short time, because the indoor coil makes little condensate when heating. Fan only mode may also work. Cooling and Dry, by contrast, will keep adding water to a drain that cannot cope.
Stop completely if water reaches a light fitting, power point or ceiling fan. Also stop if a ceiling bulges or sags, because trapped water can bring plaster down. In those cases, switch off the circuit and call for help.
Reasonable short term
Light drip on a wall split, no electrical fittings nearby, unit used briefly in Heat or Fan only while you wait for a visit.
Stop now
Water near electrics, a sagging ceiling, a repeating A3 code or a steady stream rather than occasional drops.
Hidden Damage
How Can You Tell if a Daikin Leak Has Caused Hidden Damage?
Water does not always show itself straight away. On wall splits mounted on plasterboard, moisture can soak into the wall behind the unit before any drip reaches the floor. Ducted and cassette leaks, meanwhile, may spread across ceiling insulation for days.
Look for a few quiet signs. Paint that bubbles or flakes below the indoor unit suggests water running down inside the wall. A musty smell in the room hints at damp insulation or mould. Meanwhile, a ceiling that feels soft when pressed gently, or shows a faint yellow ring, means water has been sitting there.
- Run your hand along the wall under the unit and feel for coolness or dampness.
- Check skirting boards and carpet edges for swelling or discolouration.
- Shine a torch across the ceiling at a low angle to spot sagging.
- Sniff near cupboards and corners for a damp, earthy odour.
If you find any of these, mention them when you book. The technician can then check the drain and advise whether a builder or plasterer should look at the affected area once the leak is fixed.
Install Factors
Can Poor Installation Make a Daikin Leak?
Sometimes the drain was never quite right from day one. A unit that leaked from its first summer, or right after being moved, often points to how it was fitted rather than wear.
Backward tilt
Indoor units need a slight fall toward the drain side. Even a few millimetres the wrong way lets water pool at the far end of the pan.
Drain loops
A hose that rises and dips inside the wall traps water and slime. Over time the trapped section clogs completely.
Long horizontal runs
Hoses that run sideways for a long distance before dropping move water slowly. On humid days they simply cannot keep up.
Installation faults are harder to fix than a blocked outlet, because the hose may be hidden in a wall cavity. However, a technician can often reroute the drain, add a pump, or re-level the mounting plate. These fixes solve the leak for good rather than needing repeat cleaning every season.
Good to Know
How Can You Stop a Daikin Leaking Again?
Most drain trouble is preventable with a few habits.
Open more detail
Mark the drain outlet with a small garden stake. That way it will not be buried during mulching or landscaping.
Clean filters every few weeks during heavy use. Clean filters keep the coil above freezing and protect the drain from melt floods.
Avoid setting the temperature extremely low on humid days. A moderate set point lets the unit dehumidify steadily without icing.
Ask for the drain pan and line to be cleaned during each professional service. Algae is much easier to remove before it hardens.
If you live in a humid area and have a cassette or ducted Daikin, ask the technician to test the condensate pump each year.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is water from a Daikin harmful?
Condensate is mostly plain water, though it can carry dust and algae from the pan. It is not refrigerant. Refrigerant is a gas and does not drip as liquid.
Why did my Daikin start leaking after years without trouble?
Slime and dirt build up slowly in pans and drain lines. Eventually the flow slows enough that a humid day pushes it over the edge.
Why does water drip from the outdoor unit?
In heating, the outdoor unit defrosts and sheds melted ice. In cooling, the drain hose often ends near it. Both are normal.
Can I clear the drain with a wet vacuum?
Sucking gently on the outside end of the hose can sometimes pull a blockage free. Avoid blowing air in hard, because it can push sludge back into the pan.
Why does my cassette show A3 but no water appears?
The float switch may have caught the rising water in time. Alternatively, the switch itself may be stuck. A technician can test which one it is.
Does a leak mean my Daikin needs gas?
Not always. Low refrigerant can cause icing and melt leaks, but drain problems are far more common. Testing pressures is the only way to know.
Will a leak damage the Daikin itself?
Water can corrode parts and damage the indoor fan motor or boards over time. Fixing the drain early protects both the unit and the home.
Daikin Still Dripping?
If clearing the outlet and cleaning filters has not stopped the water, give us a call. We will book a licensed technician to trace the drain and fix the cause.
