Link Failure

Actron E51 Error Code

The Actron E51 error code appears when the indoor unit of a ducted system can no longer exchange data with the outdoor unit. With the link down, the compressor cannot be controlled, so everything stops. You will mostly see this code on LR7 controllers and on Advance and Classic 2 systems.

Plain English

What Is an Actron E51 Communication Error?

Actron’s help page for the LR7 controller says E51 is associated with a loss of communication. Its product fault reference lists E51 on the Advance and Classic 2 ducted families as a communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units. On ESP Que Platinum systems, E51 is the technician menu reference for the same indoor to outdoor fault, which shows on the main screen as E05.

Every ducted system relies on its two control boards cooperating. The indoor board decides what the house needs. The outdoor board runs the compressor and outdoor fan to deliver it. They talk constantly over a data connection in the cable between the units. E51 means that conversation has stopped.

Importantly, E51 is a message about the link rather than a diagnosis. The problem could be at either end, or anywhere along the cable in between.

Which Systems

Why Do Some Actron Systems Show E51 and Others E5?

Actron has refined its controls over the years, and communication faults ended up with different numbers in different families. The underlying problem is the same, but the number on your screen depends on your system.

Systems That Show E51

LR7 controllers, which suit Classic, ESP Plus, ESP Ultima and Advance ducted systems. Advance and Classic 2 ducted families also list E51 in Actron’s reference.

Que Platinum Systems

The main screen shows E05, while the technician menu records it as E51. Both refer to indoor to outdoor communication.

Systems That Show E5

ESP Platinum, Classic, ESP Digital and LM7 setups use E5. Our E5 guide covers those.

Systems That Show E1

Serene and UltraSlim products with the WC-02 controller use E1 for the same idea. See our E1 guide.

Do not worry about memorising this. Just note the exact characters on your screen and the controller model, and the technician will take it from there.

Behind the Code

What Typically Breaks the Indoor to Outdoor Link?

Communication faults can be maddening because they are often intermittent. Here are the causes technicians come across most, ranked from quick fixes to bigger repairs.

  1. Outdoor Unit Without Power

A tripped outdoor breaker or an isolator switched off leaves the outdoor board silent. This is the first thing to rule out.
  2. Power Disturbance

A blackout, brownout or surge can leave the boards confused. A full reset often clears it.
  3. Loose Terminal

Screw terminals in either unit can loosen over years of heating and cooling cycles.
  4. Corroded Connections

Moisture and salt air oxidise terminals, raising resistance until the data signal fails.
  5. Damaged Cable

Rodents, renovations, landscaping or ageing insulation can break or short a conductor.
  6. Water Ingress

Water in a junction box, conduit or isolator enclosure can disrupt the signal, especially after heavy rain.
  7. Failed Communication Circuit

A surge or age can damage the communication section of the indoor or outdoor board.

Owner Checks

What Can You Try Before Booking a Technician?

Several E51 causes are related to power, which means a few owner checks are genuinely worthwhile. Keep to the switchboard and the outside of the units.

  • Inspect the switchboard. Look for tripped breakers or safety switches labelled for the air conditioner. Some homes have one for each unit.
  • Find the outdoor isolator, usually a weatherproof switch box beside the outdoor unit, and confirm it is in the on position.
  • Do a full reset. Turn the system off at the controller, switch off the breakers, wait several minutes, then restore power and restart.
  • Walk along any visible section of the cable route and look for crushed conduit, cut cable or signs of chewing.
  • Think about recent events, such as storms, outages, electrical work or new landscaping near the outdoor unit.

If a breaker trips again immediately after reset, stop there. Do not keep resetting it. Book a licensed technician, as a repeat trip suggests a wiring fault.

Open more detail

Why does a full reset help? After a power disturbance, each board restarts its own software. If one board finishes first, it might look for its partner, fail to find it and record a fault. Removing power from both and restoring it together gives them a clean, simultaneous start.

If E51 survives a clean restart, the cause is more likely physical, such as a broken conductor, poor terminal or damaged board. That is where professional testing comes in.

Technician Process

How Is Actron E51 Diagnosed?

Electrical faults on air conditioners involve live circuits, so diagnosis belongs with a licensed technician. Here is what they typically do.

Measure Supply at Both Units

They confirm correct voltage at the indoor and outdoor units. An outdoor board without stable power cannot communicate.

Check Every Termination

Terminals at both ends are inspected for looseness, heat marks and corrosion, then cleaned or remade as needed.

Test the Interconnecting Cable

Each conductor is tested for continuity and insulation integrity. Damaged runs are repaired or replaced.

Read Board Diagnostics

Status lights on the boards help show which board is sending and which is not responding.

Isolate the Faulty Board

Only after power and wiring check out does the technician assess the boards, so you do not pay for an unnecessary part.

Run an Extended Test

Because communication faults are often intermittent, the system is run long enough to be confident the link is stable.

Inside the Data Link

How Does the Communication Between Units Actually Work?

It helps to picture the data link as a short, constant conversation. Several times a second, the indoor board sends instructions, such as which mode to run, how fast the compressor should go and when to defrost. In return, the outdoor board reports temperatures, pressure switch states and any faults it has detected. Each message has a built in check so the receiving board can tell whether it arrived intact.

When messages stop arriving, or keep failing their checks, the board waits for a short period. It is designed to tolerate brief glitches, because small disturbances happen all the time. If the silence lasts too long, it decides the link is lost, stops the compressor for safety and displays E51.

This design is deliberate. A compressor running without supervision could overheat, ice the coil or run against a high pressure fault without anyone knowing. Stopping is the safest response, even though it is inconvenient on a hot or cold day.

Open more detail

The communication conductors carry a low voltage signal, which makes them more sensitive than mains wiring. A connection that is good enough to carry power might still be too poor to carry clean data. That is why technicians pay close attention to terminal tightness and corrosion even when both units appear to have power.

Cable routing matters too. Where a data conductor runs very close to heavy power cabling for a long distance, electrical noise can creep in. Installers normally follow manufacturer guidance to minimise this, but alterations made during later renovations sometimes change the picture.

Useful Details

What Information Helps the Technician Most?

Communication faults can be intermittent, so the technician may not see the code during their visit. Your notes fill that gap. A few minutes spent recording the details can save a lot of time on site.

  • The exact code and the controller model, ideally in a photo.
  • When the fault first appeared, and whether it is constant or comes and goes.
  • The weather at the time, especially storms, heavy rain or extreme heat.
  • Any recent power outages, switchboard work or electrical upgrades.
  • Any renovations, landscaping or pest activity near the cable route or units.
  • Whether a reset cleared the code, and how long the system ran afterwards.

With this information, the technician can prioritise the most likely causes and bring the right test equipment. It also helps them decide how long to run the system during testing to catch an intermittent fault.

Using the System

Should You Keep Resetting an E51 Fault?

One clean reset is sensible. Beyond that, repeated resets rarely help. While E51 is active, the compressor will not run, so you get no heating or cooling anyway.

The code itself is not dangerous, but its cause might be. A burnt terminal or water in an isolator is an electrical hazard. Watch for a burning smell, scorch marks on the isolator box, buzzing from the outdoor unit or a breaker that keeps tripping. If you notice any of these, switch off at the breaker and leave the system off.

In extreme weather, plan ahead while you wait. Fans, blinds and closed doors help in summer, and a safe portable heater helps in winter. Check on vulnerable family members, especially during heatwaves.

If the code clears after a reset and the system runs smoothly for a while, keep using it but note any return of E51. An intermittent pattern is valuable information for the technician.

Older Systems

Is E51 More Common on Older Actron Ducted Systems?

The LR7 controller and the Classic 2 and Advance families have been around for a good number of years, and plenty of them are still running in Australian homes. As systems age, terminals loosen, cable insulation hardens and boards accumulate heat stress. That naturally makes communication faults more likely over time.

Age alone does not mean a system needs replacing, though. Many E51 faults on older systems turn out to be a single loose terminal or a corroded joint. Repairing those is usually straightforward.

Where a board has failed on an older system, parts availability can become a factor. A technician will check what is available for your model and talk you through the options. That way you can make an informed decision about repair or replacement.

Across Australia

How Do Local Conditions Contribute to E51?

Weather is a big factor in communication faults. Thunderstorms roll through Brisbane and Sydney regularly in summer, and lightning activity can induce surges in long cable runs. Melbourne’s sharp cool changes and Adelaide’s dry storms can bring sudden outages too. Each disturbance is a chance for boards to fall out of step or for a weak circuit to fail.

Moisture matters as well. Heavy rain can find its way into poorly sealed isolators or junction boxes, particularly on older installations. Humid coastal air in places like Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Brisbane’s bayside or Perth’s beachside suburbs encourages corrosion on outdoor terminals.

Heat plays a quieter role. In Perth and Adelaide summers, outdoor units can bake for hours. Terminals expand in the heat and contract overnight. Over many years, that movement can loosen screws enough to interrupt a low voltage signal, often on the hottest afternoons.

Prevention

What Helps Prevent Repeat Communication Faults?

Periodic Servicing

Technicians check and tighten terminals during routine servicing, which addresses one of the usual E51 causes.

Protect the Cable

Let tradespeople know where the interconnecting cable runs before digging, drilling or building near it.

Seal Out Water

Ask your technician to check the outdoor isolator and junction boxes for weather sealing during a service.

Small habits add up. Keep the area around the outdoor unit and its isolator clear of mulch, plants and stored items, so water drains away rather than pooling around electrical enclosures. After major storms, glance at the isolator box and outdoor unit for visible damage. If a tree branch has fallen nearby or the isolator cover looks cracked, mention it to a technician before restarting the system.

Pest control is another sensible step. Rats and possums nest in warm roof spaces and subfloors, which is exactly where interconnecting cables run. Dealing with them promptly protects the cable as well as the rest of your home.

It is also worth talking to a licensed electrician about surge protection at your switchboard. They can advise whether it suits your home and wiring.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E51 a serious fault?

It stops the system, but the cause is often minor, such as a tripped breaker or loose terminal. Board failures are less common.

My Que shows E05 but the technician mentioned E51. Why?

On Que Platinum systems, the main screen shows E05 and the technician menu records it as E51. Both refer to the same communication fault.

Can a faulty wall controller cause E51?

E51 concerns the indoor to outdoor link. The controller link is separate, so a controller fault would usually show differently.

Why does E51 appear only on hot afternoons?

Heat can expand a loose or corroded terminal enough to break the signal. As things cool overnight, contact may be restored.

Will the system restart by itself?

Some systems retry automatically once communication returns. If the link stays down, the fault persists until repaired.

How quickly should I book after an E51?

If a reset does not clear it, book soon. The system will not heat or cool until the link is restored, and an intermittent fault tends to worsen over time.

Is my older LR7 controller worth repairing?

Often yes. Many E51 faults are wiring issues unrelated to the controller. The technician will advise if parts availability becomes a concern.
