Winter Heating Help

Actron Air Conditioner Not Heating

A cold house on a frosty morning is often the first sign that something is wrong. When an Actron air conditioner not heating is the problem, the cause may be a normal defrost pause, a setting, a blocked filter or a genuine fault in the reverse cycle system. Here is how to tell them apart and what to do next.

First Look

How Does an Actron Heating Fault Usually Show Up?

Reverse cycle ducted systems heat by running the refrigeration process backwards. The outdoor coil pulls heat from the outside air, and the indoor coil releases it into your ducts. Because of that, heating problems tend to look different from cooling ones.

Common reports include cool air drifting from the vents, the indoor fan stopping for several minutes at a time, steam rising from the outdoor unit, and rooms that warm up nicely in the afternoon but never on cold mornings. Some of these are perfectly normal. Others are early warnings.

Therefore, the first job is to separate design behaviour from a fault. The next section covers the normal pauses Actron builds into every heating cycle.

Built-in Pauses

Is Your Actron System Defrosting or Warming Up?

Two features catch many owners out each winter. Neither is a fault, and both exist to protect your comfort.

Hot Start, Also Called Preheat Delay

When heating starts, the indoor fan holds back until the indoor coil warms up. Actron’s manuals describe a delay of roughly fifteen seconds on some models, and other material refers to it as a preheat delay. The purpose is simple. It stops a blast of cold air hitting you before the coil is warm.

Automatic Defrost

In cold, damp weather, frost forms on the outdoor coil and reduces its ability to absorb heat. The control board detects this and switches into defrost. During defrost, the indoor fan stops for several minutes so cold air is not blown into the house. On LR7 controllers, the DEFROST indicator flashes every ten seconds. On some other models the heat light flashes instead, and the Que indicates defrost while the indoor fan is off.

Steam and Water Outside

During and after defrost, the outdoor unit may release steam and drip water. Actron’s manuals state that both are normal in heating. Melted frost has to go somewhere, so a damp patch under the outdoor unit in winter is expected.

After defrost finishes, hot start applies again, so there is a short extra wait before warm air returns. A full cycle can feel long on a cold morning, yet it is normal. If the fan stops and restarts many times an hour, or the outdoor unit stays coated in thick ice, that is when to look further.

Settings

Could a Controller Setting Be Stopping the Heat?

Before suspecting the hardware, check the wall controller carefully. These setting issues come up often.

  • Mode is set to Cool, Fan or Dry rather than Heat. On a Que in Auto mode, the heat to value may be set below the current room temperature.
  • The set temperature is only a degree or two above the room, so the system reaches it quickly and cycles off.
  • Zones for the rooms you are using are switched off, or a zone set temperature is lower than the main set point.
  • Continuous Fan is enabled. The LR7 manual notes that continuous fan in heating can cause cool drafts while the compressor rests.
  • Quiet Mode is limiting capacity on a very cold night.
  • A schedule or timer has turned the system off or changed its set point.

On Que systems, zone controllers and Sense remote sensors report temperature by RF. If a battery is flat or the signal has dropped to poor, the master may not know a zone is cold. Check zone status on the master controller, where Actron shows battery voltage and signal strength.

Causes Ranked

Why Is My Actron Ducted Heater Blowing Cold Air?

Once normal pauses and settings are ruled out, these are the usual causes, listed from simpler to more involved.

Owner Fixable or Minor

  • Dirty return air filter cutting airflow over the indoor coil.
  • Return air grille blocked by a couch, bed or curtains.
  • Outdoor unit packed with leaves, mulch or garden debris.
  • Flat batteries in a Que zone controller or remote sensor.
  • Outdoor unit sitting in a frost pocket with no drainage clearance.

Technician Required

  • Faulty outdoor coil sensor causing poor or missed defrost.
  • Reversing valve stuck in the cooling position.
  • Low refrigerant charge reducing heating capacity.
  • Outdoor fan motor failure causing heavy icing.
  • Duct damage or disconnection in the roof space.
  • Compressor drive or control board fault.

The reversing valve is worth understanding. It is the component that switches the refrigerant direction between cooling and heating. If it sticks, the system keeps cooling while the controller says Heat. That symptom, cold air steadily from the vents with the outdoor unit running, usually needs a technician to diagnose.

Defrost faults are the other big one. If the outdoor coil sensor reads wrongly, the board may not trigger defrost when it should. Ice then builds until the coil is almost sealed, and heating fades away. The Actron E7 code is linked to this sensor on Que, Neo and L Series controllers.

Weather

How Do Australian Winters Affect Actron Heating Performance?

Heat pumps work harder as the outdoor air gets colder. Actron’s ESP Platinum brochure quotes an operating range down to minus fifteen degrees, and older ducted ranges list heating down to around minus ten. Even so, efficiency drops as temperatures fall, and frost forms faster when the air is damp.

Melbourne and Adelaide Hills

Cold, moist mornings bring frequent frost on outdoor coils. More defrost cycles are normal here, especially in elevated or outer eastern areas.

Western Sydney and Inland Perth

Clear, still winter nights cause sharp overnight drops. Systems may defrost several times before the sun reaches the outdoor unit.

Brisbane

Milder winters mean heating is used less, so faults may stay hidden until the first cold snap. A system that sat idle for months may also have a dusty filter.

Where you place the outdoor unit matters. A unit in a shaded, low corner can sit in cold air that pools overnight. Melted defrost water also needs space to drain away, or it can refreeze under the coil. If you notice thick ice that never clears, read our guide to ice on the outdoor unit.

Safe Steps

What Should You Try First When Your Actron Will Not Heat?

  1. Confirm Heat Mode

Check the controller shows Heat, the set point sits a few degrees above room temperature and your zones are on.
  2. Wait Through One Cycle

Allow around five minutes for the safety timer, then a little longer for hot start. If the outdoor unit is defrosting, wait for it to finish.
  3. Clean the Filter

Open the return air grille, remove the filter and vacuum or rinse it gently. Let it dry fully before refitting. Never run without one.
  4. Clear the Outdoor Unit

Remove leaves and debris from around the coil. Do not chip at ice or pour hot water on the coil, as the fins bend easily.
  5. Check the Switchboard

Look for a tripped breaker labelled for the air conditioner. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and book a technician.
  6. Note Any Code

Write down any code on the controller and which controller you have. This helps the technician prepare.

One extra caution applies after a winter blackout. Actron’s LR7 and other manuals advise that if power has been off for six hours or more, the system should not be started for two hours after power returns. That lets the crankcase heater do its job. Our general guide to a reverse cycle air conditioner not heating covers other brands too.

Zoning and Layout

Why Do Some Rooms Stay Cold While Others Warm Up?

Uneven heating is one of the usual winter complaints on ducted systems. Warm air rises, so upstairs rooms and those with high ceilings tend to feel warmer, while ground floor bedrooms and rooms on the shaded side of the house lag behind. That pattern is partly physics rather than a fault.

Even so, zoning can make it better or worse. Actron’s Variable Fan Technology adjusts airflow to match the zones that are open. If only one small zone is running, the system scales back to suit it. When you then open a large living zone, it can take a while for that space to catch up. Opening the zones you need a little earlier on cold evenings often helps.

How Do Zone Limits Affect Comfort?

On ESP Ultima systems, Actron describes factory presets that limit the temperature spread between zones. As a result, you cannot set one zone very warm and another very cool at the same time. A technician can explain the limits on your particular setup.

What If One Zone Never Warms?

If a single zone stays cold with every setting correct, a damper motor may have failed closed, or a flexible duct may have dropped off its spigot in the roof. Rats and possums sometimes damage ducts too. These faults need a roof space inspection.

Does the Sensor Location Matter?

Yes. If the controller or a remote sensor sits near a heater, a sunny window or a kitchen, it may read warm and switch heating off early. Moving or reassigning the sensor is a simple change for a technician.

Finally, remember that ducts lose heat as they pass through a cold roof. Damaged or thin insulation on a duct run means a room at the far end receives noticeably cooler air than one close to the unit.

Error Codes

Which Actron Codes Might Appear With a Heating Problem?

Heating faults are often linked to sensors that manage defrost and protect the compressor. The pages below explain each code in detail, including which controllers it applies to.

An E9 in winter is worth special attention. In heating, the outdoor coil acts as the evaporator, so heavy frost can drop suction pressure far enough to trip the low pressure switch. That often traces back to a defrost problem rather than a leak, but only gauges confirm it.

Technician Visit

What Will a Licensed Technician Test on Your Actron Heating System?

A heating diagnosis follows the refrigerant path and the control logic together. Typical checks include the following.

Airflow and Filter

Return air path, filter condition, indoor fan speed and the temperature rise across the indoor coil.

Defrost Operation

Outdoor coil sensor readings, defrost start and end behaviour, and outdoor fan operation.

Reversing Valve

Whether the valve shifts correctly between modes and whether its coil is receiving the right signal.

Refrigerant Pressures

An ARCtick licensed technician reads pressures under load to assess the charge and spot restrictions.

Ducts and Dampers

Roof space ducts, joints, insulation and damper motors are inspected for leaks or stuck blades.

Controls and Wiring

Controller settings, sensor wiring and indoor to outdoor communication are confirmed.

The technicians we send hold the licences their work requires. You will get an explanation of what was found and the options for repair before any further work proceeds.

Safety

Can You Keep Using an Actron System That Is Heating Poorly?

If the only issue is a long defrost pause, yes. That is normal behaviour. If weak heating came back after cleaning the filter, you can also carry on while watching for any change.

On the other hand, stop using it if the outdoor unit stays solid with ice, the breaker trips, you smell burning, or a protection code keeps returning. In those cases, continued running can damage the compressor or the outdoor fan. Switch off at the controller, leave the breaker on if it has not tripped so the crankcase heater stays warm, and book a technician.

Open more detail

Actron recommends keeping main power on at all times, because the crankcase heater keeps the compressor oil warm and free of liquid refrigerant. Switching the system off at the controller is fine. Turning off the main isolator for long periods is not ideal unless a technician advises it for safety.

Variable speed systems such as ESP Platinum adjust capacity smoothly. As a result, a gradual heating decline can go unnoticed for weeks. If your power bills have risen while comfort has dropped, that is a useful clue to mention when you book.

Older digital scroll systems such as ESP Plus and ESP Ultima also rely on accurate sensors to manage zones and defrost. Their Smart defrost function depends on good outdoor coil readings, so sensor faults affect them in similar ways.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Actron stop blowing air for a few minutes in winter?

That is usually defrost. The indoor fan stops while the outdoor coil melts its frost, so cold air is not blown inside. Warm air returns after a short hot start delay.

Is steam from the outdoor unit a problem?

No. Actron’s manuals describe steam and water from the outdoor unit during heating as normal. It is melted frost evaporating off the warm coil.

Why does the air feel cool at first when I turn on the heat?

The hot start feature delays the fan until the coil warms. If continuous fan is enabled, you may also feel cooler air while the compressor rests between cycles.

My Actron heats fine in the afternoon but not in the morning. Why?

Cold mornings bring more frost and more defrost cycles. If heating is very weak only in the morning, a defrost sensor problem or low charge may be making it worse.

Can a dirty filter stop heating?

Yes. Restricted airflow reduces heat transfer at the indoor coil and can trigger protection. Cleaning the filter is always the first owner check.

Should I pour warm water on an iced outdoor unit?

No. Let the system defrost on its own or switch it off and let the ice melt naturally. Hot water or scraping can damage the fins and coil.

What is a reversing valve and can it fail?

It is the valve that switches the system between cooling and heating. It can stick, which leaves the system cooling when you asked for heat. A licensed technician diagnoses and repairs it.
