The cost of an air conditioner service in Melbourne depends mainly on the type of system, how many units you have, and how dirty the indoor coil is. A standard split system service is the cheapest job. Ducted systems, ceiling cassettes and units that need a full coil deep clean cost more because they take longer. Any repair found during the service is quoted separately, before the work goes ahead.

We give a firm price when you book, based on your system, rather than a range that might not fit. This guide explains what goes into that price, so you can compare quotes like for like.

What sets the price

FactorWhy it changes the cost
System typeA wall split is quickest. Ducted systems involve the roof or subfloor unit, the return air filter and the outlets.
Number of unitsA second or third split at the same address costs less each than the first, because there is one call-out.
Condition of the coilA standard clean covers normal dust. Heavy mould, grease or years without a service needs a deep clean, sometimes with the unit partly dismantled.
AccessHigh walls, second-storey outdoor units and tight roof spaces take longer and may need extra equipment.
TimingSame-day or after-hours visits in peak summer can cost more than a booked service in spring or autumn.

What a standard service includes

  • Cleaning or washing the filters
  • Cleaning the indoor coil and the fan (blower wheel)
  • Clearing and flushing the condensate drain line
  • Checking the outdoor unit, its coil and its fan
  • Checking electrical connections and the controls
  • Testing heating and cooling performance

The full checklist is on our air conditioner service page.

Service or repair call-out?

A service is preventive: the unit works and you want it clean and checked. A repair call-out is diagnostic: something is wrong, and the technician’s first job is finding the fault. Tell us which one you need when you book, and mention any error code on the display, so the right time is allowed.

How to compare quotes

  1. Ask exactly what the service includes. A “filter clean and check” is not the same as a coil and drain clean.
  2. Ask whether the price is per unit or per visit.
  3. Ask whether repairs are quoted before work starts.
  4. Check that anyone touching refrigerant holds an ARCtick licence.

How often you need one

Once a year suits many homes, and every six months if the unit runs daily or you have pets. A yearly service usually costs far less than the repairs it prevents. See how often to service your air conditioner.
