Expansion Valve and Flow

Samsung E422 Error Code

The Samsung E422 error code means the outdoor unit has detected that refrigerant is not flowing the way it should. Many displays show it as E4 then 22. The usual suspect is the electronic expansion valve, or a restriction in the pipework that behaves like a closed valve. The system stops to protect the compressor.

What It Means

What Is the Samsung E422 Error Code?

Every inverter air conditioner needs a way to control how much refrigerant flows through the system. Samsung uses an electronic expansion valve, often shortened to EEV, for this job. A small stepper motor opens and closes the valve in fine increments, guided by the outdoor control board.

During operation and self checks, the board watches temperatures around the system. If those readings suggest the valve is closed when it should be open, or that refrigerant is blocked somewhere, it raises E422. Service lists describe it as an EEV close self diagnosis error, and some technical notes link it to a blockage in the high pressure side of the pipework.

So E422 is a refrigerant flow fault, not a general overheating code. It is also not a simple sensor code. Because it involves the sealed refrigerant circuit, it always needs a licensed technician.

Two Notations

Is E4 22 the Same as E422?

Yes. On wall splits with a two character display, Samsung cannot fit four characters at once. The unit shows E4, pauses, shows 22, and repeats the cycle. Read in sequence, that is E422.

Wired controllers, ducted touch panels and cassette controllers show E422 as one string. On multi head systems, a unit number may also appear. Because E422 comes from the outdoor unit, all connected heads may display it together.

Why Both Forms Exist

It is purely a display limitation. The fault, the diagnosis and the repair are identical whichever way the code is shown.

Could the Meaning Vary?

On residential inverter splits, E422 consistently points to the expansion valve or a flow restriction. Commercial systems may use extra codes, so check the manual for those.

Some older non inverter Samsung units use a completely different short code for a similar flow problem, since they do not have an electronic valve. If your unit is quite old and shows a short code instead, the guidance here may not apply directly.

The Valve Explained

What Does the Electronic Expansion Valve Do?

Think of the expansion valve as a precise tap on the refrigerant line. It sits between the high pressure liquid side and the low pressure side of the system. By opening and closing, it controls how much refrigerant passes into the coil that is absorbing heat.

How Does It Move?

A coil of wire, called the valve coil or stepper coil, sits over the valve body. The board sends pulses to the coil, which turns a tiny needle inside the valve in small steps.

Why Is Precision Important?

Too little flow starves the system and overheats the compressor. Too much flow can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, which can damage it.

How Does the Board Know It Is Working?

The board does not usually measure valve position directly. Instead, it watches temperatures across the system. Unexpected patterns suggest the valve is not responding.

That last point explains why E422 can come from several causes. Anything that makes the system look as though flow is blocked, whether at the valve or elsewhere, can lead to the code.

Likely Causes

What Causes a Samsung E422 Fault?

The causes below range from electrical problems around the valve to blockages inside the sealed system. They are ordered roughly from simpler to more serious.

Valve Electrical Side

  • The valve coil has slipped off the valve body
  • A loose or corroded plug on the valve coil lead
  • A damaged coil winding that no longer moves the valve
  • A fault in the board circuit that drives the valve

Valve Mechanical Side

  • The valve needle has stuck closed or partly closed
  • Debris inside the system has lodged in the valve
  • Long periods unused have let the valve seize

Pipework Restrictions

  • A kinked or crushed pipe after building or garden work
  • A blocked strainer or filter in the refrigerant line
  • A service valve left partly closed after earlier work
  • Moisture that has frozen inside the system

Related Conditions

  • A low refrigerant charge that mimics a restriction
  • Temperature sensors giving misleading readings
  • Severely restricted airflow over a coil

Homeowner Checks

What Can You Safely Check With E422?

E422 involves the sealed refrigerant circuit and the outdoor unit’s electronics, so homeowner options are deliberately limited. These checks rule out simple influences and gather helpful clues.

  1. Record the Code Precisely

Note whether it appears as E422 or E4 22, and whether every head on a multi head system shows it.
  2. Look at the Outdoor Pipework

From a distance, check the visible pipes running to the outdoor unit. Look for obvious crushing, kinks or damage from recent work. Do not touch or bend them.
  3. Think About Recent Work

Was the unit recently installed, moved, regassed or repaired? Was there building, paving or landscaping near the pipes?
  4. Clear the Outdoor Unit

Make sure nothing is blocking airflow around the outdoor unit. Poor airflow can complicate the readings.
  5. Power Cycle Once

Switch off at the breaker for a few minutes and restore power. If E422 returns, leave the system off.

If you notice oily patches on pipe joints or around the outdoor unit, mention them when booking. Refrigerant leaks often leave an oily residue, and leaks can contribute to flow related faults.

Licensed Repair

How Does a Technician Fix E422?

Repairing E422 often involves refrigerant work. In Australia, that requires an ARCtick licensed technician with the proper equipment. The usual diagnostic path looks like this.

  • Confirm the code and check the outdoor board’s diagnostic display if available.
  • Inspect the valve coil to make sure it is seated correctly on the valve body.
  • Check the coil lead and plug for damage, corrosion and a firm fit.
  • Measure the coil windings to confirm they are electrically sound.
  • Check that the board is sending drive pulses to the valve.
  • Fit gauges and measure pressures and temperatures to judge refrigerant flow.
  • Check the service valves are fully open and look for kinked or crushed pipework.
  • If the valve body or a strainer is blocked, recover the refrigerant and replace the part.
  • Pressure test, evacuate and recharge the system to the correct weight.
  • Run the system and confirm normal flow and temperatures.
Open more detail

A valve coil that has slipped off the valve body is one of the happier findings. Reseating and securing it can restore normal operation without opening the refrigerant circuit. Vibration and past service work sometimes loosen the coil clip.

When the valve body itself must be replaced, the job is more involved. The refrigerant is recovered into a cylinder, the old valve is cut out and the new one is brazed in under a nitrogen purge. The system is then pressure tested, evacuated with a vacuum pump and recharged by weight. This is careful, licensed work.

Symptoms

What Else Might You Notice Alongside E422?

The code itself is the clearest sign, but other symptoms often appear before or alongside it. These can help a technician narrow things down, so it is worth paying attention to them.

Frost on Pipework

Ice forming on a small pipe or fitting at the outdoor unit can indicate a restriction. Refrigerant expands at the blockage and chills that spot.

Clicking at Start Up

Expansion valves often make a soft clicking or ticking sound as they reset. A change in that sound may be worth mentioning.

Poor Performance First

Weak cooling or heating for a while before the code appears can suggest the valve was gradually sticking.

Please do not touch frosted pipes or fittings. They can be cold enough to cause skin injury, and the pipework should not be disturbed. Simply note what you see and, if it is safe to do so from a distance, take a photo.

Hissing near the outdoor unit is another sign worth reporting. It may point to a leak, which can affect flow readings and sometimes appears together with E422. A technician will check for leaks as part of a thorough diagnosis.

Keep Using It?

Is It Safe to Keep Running a Samsung With E422?

No, it is best not to. When refrigerant cannot flow properly, the compressor works against a blockage and can overheat quickly. The protective shutdown exists to stop that from happening.

Repeated restarts are a particular concern here. Each time the system starts with restricted flow, pressures and temperatures can climb sharply. Over time, that stresses the compressor and other parts. A fixable valve problem can turn into a compressor replacement.

Unlike some electrical faults, E422 can also affect the refrigerant itself if ignored. Repeated high temperatures can break down compressor oil, and that degraded oil then circulates through the system. Stopping early keeps the repair simpler and protects the rest of the circuit.

Therefore, try one restart at most. If E422 returns, switch the system off at the breaker and book a licensed technician. While you wait, keep the house cool with blinds, fans and closed doors, or use a portable heater in winter.

After Other Work

Why Does E422 Often Follow an Install or Repair?

A noticeable share of E422 cases appear soon after work on the system. That pattern makes sense, because installation and repair involve the very parts that control refrigerant flow.

Service Valves

Outdoor units ship with service valves closed. If one is left partly closed after installation or a repair, flow is restricted.

Kinked Pipes

Copper pipe can kink if bent too sharply during installation or if disturbed later by other trades.

Moisture or Debris

If a system was not evacuated properly, moisture can freeze at the valve. Debris from cutting or brazing can also lodge in it.

If E422 appears shortly after work on your system, contact the business that did the work first. Many issues of this kind are straightforward to correct by the original installer, and they may be covered by their workmanship guarantee.

Climate Factors

Can Australian Conditions Contribute to E422?

Climate is a secondary factor with this code, but it still plays a part. Coastal homes see corrosion on the valve coil plug and lead over time, especially in beachside suburbs of Sydney, Perth and Adelaide. A corroded connection can stop the board driving the valve reliably.

Extreme heat also matters. On scorching days in Perth or western Sydney, the system runs at high pressures for long periods. A valve that is beginning to stick may fail under that load, so E422 can appear during a heatwave even if the valve was slowly deteriorating for months.

Meanwhile, systems that sit unused for long periods, such as holiday homes or units only used in summer, can see valves stiffen. The first long run of the season, perhaps during an early heatwave in Brisbane or Adelaide, is a common time for a sticky valve to show itself.

Prevention

How Can You Lower the Risk of E422?

Valve faults are not always preventable, but good practice reduces the risk. Most of it comes down to quality installation, protecting the pipework and regular use.

  • Use licensed technicians for installations, relocations and regas work.
  • Ask for the system to be properly evacuated with a vacuum pump after any refrigerant work.
  • Protect visible pipework with covers and keep it clear of garden and building work.
  • Run the system briefly every few weeks during the off season to keep parts moving.
  • Have the outdoor unit serviced regularly, including a check of valve connections.
  • Report oily stains or hissing near pipes promptly, as leaks affect flow.

Choosing the right person for refrigerant work also matters. Any technician who opens the sealed circuit should hold an ARCtick licence and use proper recovery and vacuum equipment. Asking about this before work starts is entirely reasonable, and a professional technician will be happy to confirm it.

Regular servicing in coastal areas is particularly worthwhile. A technician can spot early corrosion on the valve coil connection and clean or protect it before it causes a breakdown.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E422 an overheating code?

Not directly. It is a refrigerant flow fault linked to the expansion valve or a restriction. Overheating can follow if the system keeps running.

Why did E422 appear after a regas?

A service valve may have been left partly closed, or moisture or debris entered the system. Contact whoever did the work first.

Can a loose part cause E422?

Yes. The valve coil can slip off the valve body, and a loose plug can stop the valve moving. Both are fixable without major work.

Do I need new refrigerant?

Only if the circuit must be opened to replace a valve or strainer, or if a leak is found. Simple electrical fixes do not need it.

Will E422 clear on its own?

Sometimes it clears after a reset, but the cause usually remains. If it comes back, the valve or pipework needs checking.

Can I tap the valve to free it?

No. The valve is inside the outdoor unit near live parts, and hitting it can cause damage. Leave it to a licensed technician.

Is E4 22 different from E422?

No. Small displays split the code into two parts. Both forms mean the same fault.

Can a ducted Samsung show E422?

Yes. Ducted inverter systems also use electronic expansion valves. The meaning and the repair approach are much the same as on a wall split.

Is the repair expensive?

It depends on the cause. Reseating a coil is minor, while replacing a valve body involves refrigerant recovery and recharging, which costs more.
