Daikin Communication Fault
Daikin U4 Error Code
The Daikin U4 error code means your indoor and outdoor units have stopped talking to each other. They constantly swap signals along the cable that links them, and when those messages stop arriving, the system shuts down to protect the compressor. U4 is one of the usual Daikin codes, often appearing after storms or outdoor work. Here is what causes it and how to respond.
Plain Meaning
What Does U4 Mean on a Daikin?
U4 is a communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units. A split system is really two machines working as a team. The indoor unit decides what the room needs, and the outdoor unit does the heavy work. They coordinate through a steady stream of signals sent along the interconnecting cable.
If the indoor board stops hearing from the outdoor board for long enough, it logs U4 and stops the system. Without that conversation, neither unit can safely run the compressor or the fans in step with each other.
The U group of Daikin codes covers whole system issues rather than a single part. U4 fits that pattern well. The fault could sit in the indoor unit, the outdoor unit, the cable between them or the power supply to the outdoor side.
How the Units Talk
How Do Daikin Indoor and Outdoor Units Communicate?
In most Daikin split systems, a multi core cable runs between the indoor and outdoor units, alongside the refrigerant pipes. It carries power and a signal line. The two boards use that signal line to share information many times a minute.
Indoor to outdoor
The indoor board sends the requested mode, the room and coil temperatures, and how much heating or cooling it needs.
Outdoor to indoor
The outdoor board replies with its own status, sensor readings and any faults it has detected.
Terminal blocks
At each end, the cable connects to a terminal block. These are a common place for loose screws, corrosion or water damage.
Fuses and supplies
The outdoor board relies on a stable power supply, often protected by a fuse. If that supply fails, the outdoor side goes silent.
Because the conversation depends on every link in the chain, a fault anywhere along it produces the same code.
Reading the Code
How Will U4 Appear on Your System?
On a wall split, the front lamp usually flashes and the system stops. To read the stored code, use the check function on many Daikin remotes. Hold the Cancel or Timer Cancel button until 00 appears, then press it repeatedly while aiming at the indoor unit. A long beep tells you the code on screen matches the stored fault.
Ducted systems with a wired wall controller generally display U4 directly. Some controllers also show a unit number or sub code, which helps in homes with more than one system.
Multi split homes give an extra clue. If only one indoor head shows U4, suspect that head’s wiring or board. If every head shows it at once, the outdoor unit or its power supply is the more likely culprit.
Likely Causes
What Causes a Daikin U4 Fault?
Listed from the simplest to the most involved.
Power and cable causes
- The outdoor isolator has been switched off, often during garden or building work
- A breaker feeding the outdoor unit has tripped
- The interconnecting cable has been cut, crushed or damaged by pests
- A wiring error after installation, repair or relocation
Component causes
- Moisture or corrosion in the outdoor terminal block
- A blown fuse on the outdoor board after a storm or surge
- A failed outdoor control board that can no longer communicate
- A failed indoor control board unable to send or receive signals
The first column often has a quick answer. Many U4 call outs end with someone discovering that the isolator was switched off by a gardener or tradesperson.
Owner Checks
What Can You Safely Check for U4?
Several U4 causes can be ruled out without opening anything. Work through these steps.
Think about recent events
Note whether U4 appeared after a storm, a blackout, outdoor building work or gardening near the unit. Context points straight at likely causes.Check the outdoor isolator
Find the isolator switch near the outdoor unit and make sure it is on. It may have been knocked or switched off by someone working nearby.Check the switchboard
Look for a tripped breaker labelled for the air conditioner. Reset it once only.Look along the cable route
Where you can see the cable outside, check for obvious damage from a whipper snipper, a shovel or animals. Do not touch any damaged cable.Power cycle the system
Switch off at the breaker for about five minutes, restore power and watch the system for at least half an hour.
Do not open the indoor or outdoor covers. Terminal blocks carry mains voltage, and the outdoor board can hold a charge after power is off. Also avoid repeated restarts. If you smell burning, see scorch marks or the breaker keeps tripping, switch off at the breaker and call a licensed technician.
After a Storm
Why Does U4 Often Appear After Storms?
Storms are one of the usual triggers for U4. Several things can happen during a storm that break the conversation between the units.
- A power surge can blow the protective fuse on the outdoor board, leaving it without power.
- Lightning nearby can damage communication circuits on either board.
- Driving rain can push water into a poorly sealed outdoor terminal block.
- Brief outages can leave the boards out of step until the system is power cycled.
- Falling branches or debris can damage the outdoor unit or its cable.
If U4 appears the morning after a storm, a single power cycle at the breaker is a sensible first step. If that does not clear it, a technician will usually check the outdoor fuse, the terminal blocks and both boards.
On Site
What Does a Technician Check for U4?
A licensed technician follows the communication path from one end to the other, ruling out each link in turn.
Power to the outdoor unit
The first check is whether the outdoor unit is receiving correct power. Without it, there can be no communication at all.
Terminal blocks at both ends
Connections are checked for tightness, correct wiring order, corrosion and signs of water or heat damage.
Interconnecting cable
The cable is tested for continuity and insulation. Damage along a hidden section can be found this way.
Outdoor fuse and board
The outdoor board’s fuse and power supply are checked. A blown fuse often signals a surge, and the technician will check for further damage before replacing it.
Indoor board signals
If everything else is sound, the technician checks whether the indoor board is sending and receiving signals correctly.
Once the fault is fixed, the system is run through a full cycle to confirm the units are communicating reliably.
Running Safety
Is It Safe to Keep Using a Daikin With U4?
The system will not run while U4 is active, because neither unit can coordinate safely. One power cycle is reasonable and sometimes clears a glitch after an outage.
However, if U4 returns or never clears, stop restarting. Repeated attempts will not fix a damaged cable, blown fuse or failed board, and they may stress parts that are still healthy.
Be especially careful if the cable may have been damaged. A cut or crushed cable can expose live conductors. Keep people and pets away from any visibly damaged section and leave the breaker off until a technician has made it safe.
Local Conditions
How Do Australian Conditions Contribute to U4?
Storm season is the big one. In Brisbane and across south east Queensland, summer storms bring lightning, surges and outages that regularly trigger U4. Sydney’s summer storms do the same, and so do the less frequent but powerful storms that sweep through Melbourne and Adelaide.
Coastal salt is a slow contributor. Outdoor terminal blocks in beachside homes in all five cities are exposed to salty air every day. Over years, corrosion can creep into the connections and make communication unreliable. U4 that comes and goes in damp weather often traces back to this.
Wildlife causes surprising damage. Rats, possums and cockatoos sometimes chew exposed cable, especially where it runs along walls or through roof spaces. Termites and ants can also invade terminal blocks.
Heat matters too. In Perth and Adelaide, cables and terminal blocks in hot roof spaces and on sun exposed walls age faster, and insulation can turn brittle over many summers. Finally, renovation and garden work are common triggers everywhere. New fences, decks, paving and garden beds often go in right beside outdoor units, and cables are easily nicked or isolators switched off.
System Types
Does U4 Behave Differently on Ducted and Multi Split Systems?
The meaning is the same across the range, but how it affects your home varies.
Single wall split
The one room served by that system loses heating and cooling. The cable is usually short, which can make the fault easier to trace.
Ducted system
The whole house loses air conditioning. The cable often runs through the roof space, where heat and pests can affect it.
Multi split
Whether one head or all heads show U4 tells the technician where to start looking, which saves time.
Before the Visit
What Details Help a Technician Trace U4?
Communication faults can hide anywhere along a cable that may run through walls, roof spaces and gardens. Your observations help the technician decide where to start. As a result, a few notes made before the visit can shorten the job considerably.
- The date and time U4 first appeared, and whether it has happened before.
- Any storm, blackout or electrical work in the days beforehand.
- Any garden work, fencing, paving or renovation near the outdoor unit or cable route.
- Whether the outdoor unit makes any sound at all when the system is switched on.
- Whether other appliances or circuits in the home were affected at the same time.
- Signs of rats, possums or birds around the roof space or outdoor unit.
- The model numbers of both units, if you can read them safely.
The sound of the outdoor unit is a particularly useful clue. Complete silence suggests the outdoor side has no power, which points to the isolator, breaker, cable or a blown fuse. On the other hand, an outdoor unit that clicks or hums but never starts suggests it has power yet cannot hear the indoor unit.
Intermittent U4
Why Does U4 Sometimes Come and Go?
Some owners find that U4 appears for a day, then clears, then returns a week later. That pattern is frustrating, yet it is also informative. Intermittent communication faults usually come from a connection that is almost, but not quite, working.
Damp weather faults
Moisture can creep into a corroded terminal block and disrupt the signal. When things dry out, communication returns.
Hot afternoon faults
Heat expands metal parts. A slightly loose terminal screw may lose contact in the afternoon sun and reconnect overnight.
Random faults
A partly damaged cable or a board starting to fail can drop the signal without any clear pattern.
Keeping a simple record of when U4 appears helps the technician match the pattern to a likely cause.
Getting a Technician Out
How Do You Book a Technician for U4?
Rapid Air Cooling is a booking and dispatch service. We are not a Daikin dealer and we do not claim manufacturer accreditation. When you call, tell us about the U4 code and anything that happened beforehand, such as a storm, power cut or outdoor work. That helps the technician come prepared.
We book Daikin repairs through our Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide pages. More on the brand is on our Daikin air conditioning page, plus Daikin in Brisbane and Daikin in Sydney.
Related Codes
Which Codes Are Related to U4?
Communication faults overlap with board and power codes, so these related pages may help.
E1, outdoor board
The outdoor board reported a fault in itself. A completely dead board may show U4 instead.
A1, indoor board
A failing indoor board can also lose the ability to communicate.
H0, compressor sensing
Another wiring and electronics fault, this time inside the outdoor unit.
L5, inverter overcurrent
A surge that damages the inverter may show up as L5 rather than U4.

Good to Know
How Can You Reduce the Chance of U4?
Several simple measures help, and most cost little or nothing to put in place around your home.
Open more detail
Label the outdoor isolator clearly so gardeners and tradespeople know not to switch it off, or know to switch it back on afterwards.
Tell anyone working near the outdoor unit where the cable runs, so they can avoid it when digging or fixing.
Consider surge protection at the switchboard if you live in a storm prone area. A licensed electrician can advise on options.
Ask the technician to check terminal blocks during routine servicing, especially at coastal homes. Early corrosion is far easier to deal with than a failed connection. Our troubleshooting guide covers other common symptoms.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the usual cause of U4?
Loss of power to the outdoor unit is very common, often from a switched off isolator or tripped breaker. Storm damage and cable problems are also frequent.
Why did U4 appear after a storm?
Surges and outages can blow the outdoor fuse, damage boards or leave the units out of step. Try one power cycle, then call if it stays.
Can a gardener cause U4?
Yes. Isolators are easily switched off by accident, and cables can be nicked by edging tools or shovels.
Only one head on my multi split shows U4. What does that mean?
The problem is likely that head’s own cable or board. If all heads showed it, the outdoor unit would be the main suspect.
Is a damaged cable dangerous?
It can be. A damaged cable may expose live wires. Keep away from it, leave the breaker off and wait for a technician.
Will U4 clear by itself?
Occasionally, after a brief outage, a power cycle clears it. If it returns or never clears, there is a real fault to find.
Why does my outdoor unit stay completely silent?
Silence usually means the outdoor side has no power. Check the isolator and breaker first. If both are on, a blown fuse or damaged cable may be the cause, and a technician should take over.
Can U4 appear on a new installation?
It can, usually from a wiring error at the terminal blocks. The installer or a technician can check the connections.
